A New Contract for a Global Economy That Puts People First
by Leire Luengo,
In a time of global uncertainty and intersecting crises, a new kind of economy is not just possible—it is essential. And it already exists. Today, the Cooperatives and Mutuals Leadership Circle (CM50), an initiative of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), proudly launches “A Contract for a New Global Economy”: a bold call to action to transform the rules that shape our economic future.
This document is more than a vision—it is a commitment. Developed collectively by leaders of the world’s largest cooperative and mutual enterprises, the Contract outlines five strategic commitments to guide governments and international bodies toward a fairer, more democratic, and sustainable global economy.
Together, these commitments call for:
Official recognition of the cooperative model
Equitable access to sustainable finance
Supportive regulatory environments for innovation and digital growth
Protection of cooperative identity and democratic governance
Full integration of cooperatives into national SDG strategies
Rooted in the values of solidarity, participation, and long-term responsibility, this Contract reflects the lived experience and proven impact of enterprises that place people and the planet above profit.
